Dayton unveils 78‑kilowatt solar canopy at West Park police site; launches local sustainability pilots

At the June 12 meeting of the Environmental Advisory Board, Sustainability staff member Niani Brown reported that Dayton Police cut the ribbon on a new West Park facility that includes a 78‑kilowatt solar array canopy — the first array to be fully built within the City of Dayton.
Brown said three sustainability fellows will assist with community engagement, energy data and a home repair pilot this summer. She described a soft launch forthcoming for a Dayton Home Repair Network pilot, supported by $375,000 from CenterPoint Energy to fund weatherization improvements. The city also was selected as one of 300 cities worldwide for the Youth Climate Action Fund; Brown said mini grants of $1,000 to $5,000 will be available to youth ages 15–24 for climate‑resilience projects.
Brown said staff are beginning outreach for the Dayton Urban Forestry Master Plan and will circulate surveys and stakeholder information; the board requested a future presentation on the plan. Members discussed outreach strategies and how the fellows and pilot programs might support neighborhood engagement and weatherization work.
Next steps include posting outreach links for the Master Plan, scheduling the soft launch of the home‑repair pilot and sharing more details about Youth Climate Action Fund application opportunities.
