East Rutherford bans data centers across borough zoning except Meadowlands-area sites

The Borough of East Rutherford adopted Ordinance 2026-12 on June 16, amending Chapter 389 (Zoning) to confirm that data centers are prohibited uses or structures in all borough zoning districts except properties located within the jurisdiction of the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission.
Mayor Jeffrey Lahullier opened the ordinance hearing for a second reading and asked for public comment; there were no speakers. Councilmember Antonio Segalini moved the hearing be closed and the ordinance adopted; the motion carried with all present voting aye.
The ordinance language as introduced restricts data-center uses throughout the borough while preserving the authority of the Meadowlands commission over properties in its jurisdiction. The council provided no public-record commentary on enforcement details during the adoption; any implementing code edits or permit procedures will be handled by the borough’s planning and zoning staff and the borough attorney as needed.
