Union City Borough Council accepted the resignation of part-time Officer Rick Skonieczka at its Oct. 7 meeting and approved steps to maintain police staffing.
The certified civil service list contained two candidates; Chief Pernice requested permission to proceed with background checks and to hire two part-time officers. Council approved completing background checks for two part-time officers from the certified civil service list (motion by Councilor Joyce, second by Councilor Steadman), leaving hiring decisions subject to those checks and the civil service process.
After an executive session on personnel and contracts, the council moved to approve a police contract for Zackery Shelly (motion by Councilor Steadman, second by Councilor Kerns); the motion carried unanimously. The minutes do not include contract terms, salary, or start date for Shelly.
