McIntosh council adopts 1890’s Festival resolution, declines $5,000 town sponsorship after tie

The resolution was read aloud by Mayor Scott and carried after Cllr Deaderick moved for adoption and Cllr Medeiros seconded; President Jones, Vice President Mullikin, Cllr Deaderick and Cllr Medeiros voted yes. Immediately afterward, the council approved a motion empowering the Town Administrator to finalize the operational details between the town and the Seedlings Garden Club.
Debate over direct town sponsorship followed. Cllr Deaderick moved that the town sponsor the Garden Club in the amount of $5,000; Cllr Medeiros seconded. Several residents spoke during the discussion. Mary Ann Kelley thanked the council for prior festival work and urged concise council responses to resident communications. Sheila Winters said the Friends (a local group) “never received a sponsorship,” expressing opposition to using town funds. Suzanne Sindledecker, who read the Garden Club’s sponsorship letter, said there was “no seed money for the festival” and that the Garden Club would value support. Patty Dodd urged private support and offered $10,000 for start-up costs, saying the government “shouldn’t be involved.” Holger said, “There is no need for money at the moment…let’s work together to make the festival happen.”
After discussion and public comments, the sponsorship motion resulted in a tie vote and failed. The council did not adopt the $5,000 sponsorship, but left authorization for the Town Administrator to finalize non-financial details and coordination with festival organizers.
The council’s actions leave organizational responsibility with festival volunteers and the Seedlings Garden Club, with the town available to support logistics but not providing the proposed direct sponsorship. The festival is scheduled for October 2026; those seeking more information were directed to the Town Office and the town’s Facebook page.
The council handled the festival items during its regular meeting and did not set a subsequent special session on the sponsorship; staff will proceed with the administrative tasks authorized by council.
