Council authorizes completion of Pelican Lake mechanical removal and monthly treatment after reports of heavy algae
Summary
After reports the lake cleanup was about 35% complete and 18 dump‑truck loads (about 180 cubic yards) of material removed, council authorized finishing mechanical removal and monthly follow‑up treatment with Green Clean; staff estimated a $695 monthly maintenance cost and identified options such as ultrasonic units for longer‑term control.

Town staff reported that crews have removed bulk aquatic material from Pelican Lake — about 18 dump‑truck loads, roughly 180 cubic yards — and recommended completing mechanical removal before beginning monthly chemical maintenance. Staff said a peroxide‑based algaecide marketed as Green Clean was recommended by the town’s environmental consultant and would cost about $695 per month for routine follow‑up treatment. "We are removing the plants that are growing from the bottom, and then the algae attaches to those pieces," the staff member said, describing mechanical removal as a necessary first step.
Council members questioned frequency and environmental effects and asked whether nonchemical alternatives such as LG Sonic ultrasonic units could be used for long‑term control. "This may be an adjunct tool to chemical treatment," a council member said; staff said the ultrasonic approach might be worth considering once the lake is under control. Staff reported an equipment failure the morning of the meeting and estimated the project was roughly 35% complete; they estimated an additional ~$9,600 would be needed to finish the mechanical removal. Council discussed whether to pause and seek more options, but members ultimately moved and seconded a motion to continue mechanical removal and add the Green Clean follow‑up treatment, with funding from contingency/budgeted sources. The motion passed unanimously on roll call.
Council directed staff to keep the board informed about progress, to attempt to hold any contractor discounts noted in the meeting and to return with updated costs if options change.
