Women’s Auxiliary seeks volunteers to support Savannah Volunteer Fire Department

Bill Davis, a reporter for Jackson County News, said the Women’s Auxiliary provides quick breaks, food and drinks to firefighters working prolonged incidents for the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department.

The auxiliary is called up for large-structure fires and weather-related events, an agency official said: “part of the women's auxiliary is to support the firefighters in large scale incidents, so large structure fires,” and for weather incidents such as heavy snow or hurricanes the group “will call up the women's auxiliary to provide food, drinks, anything else that they need,” the official added.

A staff member who described the day-to-day impact of that help said, “Not enough can be said about our women's auxiliary. They help us out tremendously. ... They're good about bringing us food. They're also good, on Monday nights. 1 Monday night a month, they'll come up and feed us.” That monthly meal and on-scene assistance, the staff member said, helps crews sustain long searches or lengthy firefighting shifts.

Organizers urged local residents to join. “We would love to have more members come and join our women's auxiliary,” an agency official said.
