Kratzberger Gearheads ask Gladstone to ease sign rules to allow programmable LED reader board

Sean Price, coach of the Kratzberger Gearheads Robotics Club at Kratzberger Middle School, asked the council to consider amending city signage rules so the school can replace an aging manual reader board with a programmable LED reader board.
Price said the current manual sign is “outdated, frankly, a safety hazard, unsafe, dangerous for staff and students to manually swap out those plastic letters,” and described the LED board as a safety and communications upgrade that would allow the school to post timely information for families, events and emergencies. He told the council the club has committed $6,000 of its own funds and is pursuing grants and partnerships for the remainder. To reduce neighborhood impact, Price proposed programming the board to dim or go dark at specified times.
Mayor Milch thanked Price and asked staff to carry the request to the planning department for review of existing codes and options for updating signage rules. The council did not vote on a code change at the meeting; staff said they would examine the request and report back to planning and council as appropriate.
