Juno Beach approves amendment to Waste Management agreement to add automated carts

The Juno Beach Town Council unanimously approved a resolution to amend its solid-waste and recycling collection services agreement with Waste Management to add automated collection using 64-gallon carts.

Jeff Sabin, government affairs representative for WM, told the council the company plans to deliver carts starting in late August and to begin the program on Monday, Oct. 7. He said the conversion to automatic side-loader trucks is intended to improve safety for drivers and maintain current service levels: "No service changes. The rate remains the same," Sabin said, adding that the move will change collection days and that the company would provide advance notice to residents.

Town staff presented a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a first amendment to the collection agreement incorporating the new automated technology. Council members who spoke said they appreciated the safety and operational benefits, and the council approved the resolution by roll call vote.

The town clerk read that the resolution authorizes the mayor to execute the amended services agreement and establishes an effective date. Staff said Waste Management will supply outreach materials (postcards, brochures and curb-handle literature) to help residents know collection days and how to use the carts.

Council and staff said they will monitor rollout details such as how multifamily properties and HOAs will receive service and whether smaller multifamily buildings will receive different containers. Sabin said WM has experience customizing service for multifamily communities and will work with town staff on any needed adjustments.

The council recorded the vote as unanimous.
