Sheriff’s Office gets approval for canteen price increases and a replacement administrative vehicle

The Lapeer County Properties Committee on Jan. 22 approved adjustments to jail canteen service prices and authorized purchase of a replacement administrative vehicle for the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Eric Kanyak said the proposed canteen changes reflect corrected pricing discussed with Lt. Beebe; the committee approved an $0.08 increase per meal, a $0.05 increase per medical snack and a $0.24 increase per Kosher meal. Staff said meals for inmates from outside Lapeer County are fully reimbursed and the increases will be paid from line 207-351-740.000 at no additional cost to the county general fund.
Deputy Kanyak also reported an administrative vehicle was declared a total loss. The committee approved purchase of a 2026 Dodge Durango GT from Jim Riehl’s Friendly Dodge Jeep Ram of Lapeer at $46,114, Priority One equipment at $5,989.10 and installation by Emergency Fleet Solutions at $2,400, for a total project cost not to exceed $54,503.10. Funding will come partly from a supplemental insurance loss recovery settlement of $17,000 and the remaining $37,503.10 from vehicle line 207-301-980.000; the committee approved a budget amendment. The motion was made by Commissioner Ian Kempf and supported by Kevin Knisely; the motion carried.
