Sheriff’s Office MOU with state ICAC task force approved to bolster online child-exploitation investigations

The commission approved an MOU that places a county detective with the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and enables training, funding and investigative assistance for local online crimes against children investigations.
On July 21 the Weber County Commission approved a memorandum of understanding that defines the Sheriff’s Office participation in the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force overseen by the state attorney general.
Sergeant Dustin Stewart, who leads the Special Victims Unit, told commissioners the agreement allows the county to receive training and funding, to get investigative assistance on complex online child-exploitation cases, and to assign a detective to the task force to work both local cases and those in surrounding jurisdictions. The MOU covers the coming year.
Commissioners praised the program’s benefits for child-protection work and approved the agreement by voice vote. The county’s participation is intended to enhance coordination with the state and neighboring agencies on both proactive and reactive investigations.
