Commission advances first reading to allow Weber Fire District to extend service area into Cache County

Weber County commissioners on July 21 advanced a first-reading ordinance clarifying the Weber Fire District’s service area, a step county staff said would allow the district to collect fees in areas of Cache County it has been serving informally.
County counsel (Chris Crockett) told the commission that state law permits interlocal cooperation and annexation approaches and that the ordinance records the county’s lack of objection to the district extending service into adjacent Cache County. A fire district official said the district already provides emergency responses in those areas but could not collect taxes or fees there; formalizing the service area would allow fees to be charged to cover response costs as development in the area increases.
Commissioners discussed the operational and revenue rationale and scheduled a final reading for the following week. The first-reading motion passed by voice vote. Staff said the ordinance is intended to reduce confusion over response and billing and to ensure residents in the affected area are adequately protected as the area grows.
