Upper Merion Library sets summer reading dates, seeks ways to reach middle-school students

The Upper Merion Library Board on May 11 set the library’s Summer Reading Program to run eight weeks from June 15 through Aug. 7 and discussed outreach work to connect students with the program.
During the Children’s Programming report, the staff member responsible for children’s services said library teams have visited all local elementary schools to promote the program but were unable to gain entry to the middle school this year and are developing alternate ways to reach those students. The board did not record a specific plan or timeline for that outreach in the meeting minutes.
The Community, Outreach & Technology Coordinator said the library will also run teen-focused activities this summer, including a snack program and a new movie-discussion series designed to build a cinephile community among older youths. The minutes did not identify the staff members who will run those programs or list budgets for the activities.
Library Services noted the library closed early on May 12 for a Township Employee Appreciation Luncheon and will be closed May 23 and May 25 for Memorial Day weekend. The board also voted to cancel its July meeting and will resume its schedule in August.
A staff member in Library Resources is scheduled to retire in June; the board plans to create a job description for the position and did not record further staffing details at the meeting.
