Council authorizes purchase of portable ventilator for fire department

Edwardsville City Council approved the purchase of one ZOLL portable ventilator for the fire department on May 4.
The fire chief described the ventilator as a short-term device that performs mechanical ventilation when manual bagging is not adequate. Chief Tim Glitter said the equipment typically lasts seven to ten years depending on use and comes with a standard two-year warranty; the maintenance contract will increase related device costs by about $150 per year, which the chief said the department's general operating budget can absorb.
Staff noted the department pursued grants for the device but was not awarded funding for this particular unit, so the city will fund the purchase from special sales tax. Council moved to purchase one ventilator for $16,220.60 (amount read into the record); the motion was seconded and approved by roll call.
The chief said the ventilator is important because it maintains consistent tidal volume and respiratory rate during critical response, replacing manual ventilation when necessary.
