Planning commission recommends growth-management ordinance changes to county commissioners

The Dawson County Planning Commission on Aug. 19 recommended that the Board of Commissioners consider proposed text amendments to the county’s growth-management ordinances.
Community Development Director Richard Osborne summarized results of a county Growth Management Survey that ran June 2–July 23, 2025 and was mailed with the county’s annual tax assessments. The amendments presented would change text in the Dawson County Code of Ordinances related to growth management; staff explained the intent is to slow or better manage growth and align future development with county priorities.
Members of the public who spoke during the hearing generally supported tighter growth controls. Tony Bradly said he supported the ordinance change to slow growth. Ruby Daniel said growth is inevitable but urged code changes that seek developers who respect community character. Resident Jeri Ward cautioned staff and commissioners to craft wording carefully to avoid loopholes. After discussion, the commission moved to recommend approval of the text amendments to the Board of Commissioners; the motion passed 4-0 (mover: John Maloney; second: Steve Sanvi).
The recommendation forwards the proposed ordinance language to the Board of Commissioners for consideration and any subsequent public hearings or revisions.
