Wythe County raises water rates and connection fee; Progress Park unaffected

Wythe County officials voted July 14 to raise municipal water rates and increase the new connection fee, a change county staff said is needed to maintain service and capital plans.
County Administrator Stephen D. Bear presented a table of proposed increases that raised base and meter-equivalent charges and bumped residential volume rates from $11.47 to $12.04 per 1,000 gallons. The proposed flat new-connection fee rose to $2,300 from $1,500. Mr. Bear asked the Board to consider the increases as presented and noted the revised fee schedule would feed into connection promissory schedules.
Vice Chair J.W. “Dicky” Morgan moved to approve the changes; Supervisor Sarah P. Crockett seconded the motion. Chair James D. “Jamie” Smith and three other supervisors voted yes; Supervisors Jesse R. Burnett and Stacy A. Terry voted no. Rolland R. Cook was absent.
Board members clarified that the Town of Wytheville provides water for Progress Park and that the county rate changes do not affect that system. The Board also acknowledged receipt of one anonymous email submitted on the proposed increase.
The new rates and connection fee will take effect per the county’s administrative schedule and be incorporated into customer billing and permitting practices. The county indicated staff will update related promissory-note language and administrative forms to reflect the higher connection fee.
