Board ratifies Ivy Tech lease to host CDL training and expand career‑tech options

The La Porte Community School Corporation board ratified on July 20 a lease agreement with Ivy Tech Community College that will place Ivy Tech programming inside the district's career and technical education center, including a commercial driver’s license (CDL) training course scheduled to begin in August.
Superintendent Dr. Jen Wood said the lease was executed in June and the district is asking the board to formally ratify the agreement so Ivy Tech can begin programming and workforce development activities in district facilities. "This lease provides space within our career and technical education center to support Ivy Tech programming in La Porte," Dr. Wood said; she noted CDL training is unique among local high school programs and the partnership will allow more in‑house programming.
A board member asked how the contract value of $50,000 was determined. Dr. Wood said Ivy Tech and the district negotiated the amount, compared it with Ivy Tech's current leased space arrangements and that attorneys from both sides worked through terms to reach the final agreement. "It was kind of a negotiation process...a number of attorneys from Ivy Tech's side and then on our side...we had a lot of back and forth with this agreement to make sure we had it in its final form that was acceptable to both sides," she said.
Board members welcomed the partnership and noted expected benefits tied to the district’s developing data center academy, which Ivy Tech will support with certifications. The ratification passed by voice vote.
What’s next: Ivy Tech will begin establishing space in the district's facility; the district will coordinate scheduling, programming and certification pathways for students.
