Principals highlight literacy work, Orton Gillingham interventions and school culture across elementary buildings

Three elementary principals reported building-level successes and shared priorities for the district.
Chris Samick (Patrick'sburg Elementary) said the school has focused on climate and strategic interventions, including Orton Gillingham for early grades and tiered supports for older students. Samick described a creative attendance incentive and asked for more principal-directed PLC time to let buildings target their own intervention priorities.
The Spencer Elementary principal described membership in a literacy cadre, expanded Orton Gillingham training and instructional rounds that helped teachers observe and adopt effective practices. Spencer reported DIBELS gains and said comprehension and math fluency in grades 5–6 remain priority targets.
Carol Watson (Gosport Elementary) said Gosport sustained 100% iRead pass rates for grade 3 in recent years and runs ambassador programs, "School Loo" morning check-ins, and other culture-building activities. Watson joined other principals in highlighting student mental-health needs and the constraints of shared counselor resources.
All three principals asked the board to consider resources—time, training and staffing—so interventions can be implemented with fidelity and sustained across buildings.
