Angier amends event calendar to hold Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances on official holidays

The Angier Board of Commissioners voted unanimously June 2 to amend the FY 2026–2027 event calendar so Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances will occur on the actual holiday or the officially observed holiday.
Commissioner Jennifer Sloan argued that scheduling commemorative events on the actual day would better maximize public participation. Parks and Recreation Director Austin Yarbrough said the proposed draft scheduled some events on other dates to keep the Veterans Memorial available and to accommodate residents traveling on holidays.
After discussion about attendance versus memorial access, Commissioner Sloan moved to amend the event calendar so the two observances occur on the actual or officially observed holiday; the motion carried 4-0.
The board directed staff to update the calendar and public materials to reflect the change. The amended calendar was not read in full during the meeting; the clerk or parks staff will provide the final calendar as part of meeting records.
