Residents urged the Town of Kiowa to reject a proposed semi-truck parking lot on Highway 69 and the council denied the proposal after hearing their concerns.
Johnny Brown told the council the site lacked restrooms and lodging for truckers and was too close to homes, citing the town ordinance that prohibits such facilities within 300 feet of a dwelling. Joni Patton echoed safety concerns about traffic from the highway; Sherman Nichols said the site would be too close to his driveway and noted previous accidents there; Donald Brooks, a neighbor, agreed and said access is already difficult. Council member J. Ray said he had spoken with residents in the area and noted there had been no request to change the 300-foot ordinance.
The owner of the proposed lot, Daniel Smith, said he understood residents’ concerns. Mayor D. Drake stated the council would not change the 300-foot ordinance and denied Smith’s request to install a semi-truck parking lot.
Why it matters: the decision preserves a residential buffer the council said is required by local ordinance and reflects resident safety and access concerns. The council recorded the denial on the public record.
