Council backs student travel sponsorships and approves park mural project

The Soda Springs City Council approved several community sponsorships and authorized a public-art mural project at a park retaining wall.
Rebecca Fryar introduced Kylee Fullmer and asked the council to sponsor Soda Springs High School FCCLA students traveling to the national competition in Washington, D.C. Councilman Mitchell J. Hart moved that the city contribute an additional $1,300 so that, as stated during the meeting, "for a total contribution of $2,600." Councilman Ryan Carpenter seconded the motion; all were in favor and the motion carried.
Separately, Sierra Muir requested sponsorship to attend the World Schools Debate in Washington, D.C.; Councilman Hart moved to approve a $500 donation, Councilman Carpenter seconded and the motion carried.
During citizen input, interns McKenzie Gritton, Ari Floyd-Reading, Elijah Davis and Soraya Luschas introduced themselves and noted summer internships at the Kiewit Mine. Cindy Erickson proposed a public-art mural for a long retaining wall owned by Caribou County, estimating the project at about $1,000 and hoping for completion by July 4; Amanda Larsen and Bryce Somson discussed including cattle imagery and a Caribou County identification. The council authorized Amanda and Cindy to move forward and asked staff to coordinate on sprinkler placement.
Next steps: the city will process the approved sponsorships and the mural proponents will coordinate with Director Jeff Young on site details.
