The City of Krebs City Council on Sept. 17 handled a string of operational items: a purchase of breathing apparatus and masks for the fire department, utility permission for an Allsup’s convenience store, hiring and payroll payouts, several property abatements and a temporary authorization for the city clerk to process payroll and OkMRF matters until a new treasurer is in place.
Council approved the purchase of MSA firefighting equipment from Casco Industries for $31,627.00, including three SCBA units and related bottles and masks. The purchase motion passed unanimously.
The council also voted to allow the City of McAlester to provide water to Allsup’s at 1961 E U.S. Hwy 270 in Krebs; the building permit for Allsup’s was tabled pending permits from the State Fire Marshal and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
Personnel actions included approval to hire Hunter Donoley as a police officer effective Sept. 22, 2024, and approval of a payout for Michael House’s accrued comp time, vacation and sick leave: gross $24,377.79, taxes deducted $9,031.84, net $15,345.95. Council voted to make City Clerk Cindy J. Cooper the temporary authorized OkMRF agent so payroll and retirement filings can continue until a new treasurer assumes the position.
The council approved nuisance abatements for several properties: 375 SE Hayes and 350 SE Grant (the latter to include trees and other nuisances). Regarding 55 NW Maple, owner Gay Byrum Campbell asked for more time; the council amended the abatement motion to allow six months for cleanup but said the city will proceed with abatement if utilities are disconnected.
Councilmember Connie Poole raised that claims were not provided to the council in advance. Clerk Cindy Cooper said the treasurer had been terminated and she lacked authority to process or pay bills; the council voted to table approving claims until the new treasurer is in place and able to process them.
Mayor Tommy Ray Walker told the council staff had interviewed five candidates and hired a treasurer who will start Sept. 25; council discussion noted onboarding and training needs and the possible expanded use of a temporary research clerk to help catch up on administrative tasks.
Adjournment to KUA followed a unanimous vote to adjourn the meeting.
