Commission recommends permit for barndominium at 20 SE Adams Ave.

Applicant Tina Shumway described plans for a barndominium (a residence with attached shop) at 20 SE Adams Ave., and said the family intends to tear down the existing dilapidated residence and replace it with a modern metal building. Johnny McDaniel said the plan is to erect a 30‑by‑50 metal structure and to reuse some building materials where feasible.
Chairman Mark Moy cautioned that if the structure later converted to commercial use the building would need state and fire‑marshal inspections and could require rezoning. "If it's going to be a commercial building, you have to go through the department, the fire marshal," Moy said. Applicant Tina Shumway said the current plan is residential with a shop and that any commercial conversion would come later.
Commissioner Richard Cotton moved to recommend granting a permit; the motion was seconded and the commission voted unanimously in favor.
The recommendation will allow staff to advance the building permit process; applicants were reminded to comply with applicable fire, plumbing and electrical inspections and to coordinate with staff on any future change of use.
