Board hears CTE/Project Lead The Way showcase report; district to seek grants to expand STEM offerings

Superintendent Hedberg and staff briefed the board on visits to Career and Technical Education (CTE) sites and a Project Lead The Way showcase. Hedberg said staff observed robust student projects — including a student-built wind power generator — and recommended pursuing grants and using existing CTC funds to bring elements of the curriculum to McDowell County Schools.
"We lisonbee to the student, presentations, and it was middle school students and high school students... The program is phenomenal," Hedberg said, describing hands‑on learning that could be extended to younger grades. District staff said they will seek state department grants to pilot programming and noted CTC funding is available to support initial work.
Board members signaled support for exploring grants and partnerships; Hedberg said staff would follow up with grant applications and presentations to principals and program directors.
