Bradshaw Elementary reports low readiness and high chronic absenteeism; expands family-engagement and PBIS strategies

Bradshaw Elementary Principal Nikki Hall presented diagnostic data showing learning gaps and attendance challenges, and outlined family-engagement and behavioral strategies the school is using to improve outcomes.

Hall said beginning-of-year diagnostics showed an increase in students three or more grade levels behind (from 12% to 16% in one measure) and reported the school finished the prior year with 52.66% chronic absenteeism. To counter that trend, the school is running small-group math instruction during a dedicated "win" block, holding Hornet Huddles (family engagement activities) and distributing attendance survival kits to families. A large banner used in outreach reads, "Remember Hornets, our puzzle is incomplete without you in your seat," which Hall cited as part of a messaging push to emphasize that "every day counts and every minute matters."

The presentation also covered PBIS practices: positive referrals, bus-driver behavior referrals, guidance lessons and incentives for students who meet attendance goals. Hall said the school has focused on parent education with local medical professionals to clarify when illness warrants staying home and to reduce medically unnecessary absences. The board acknowledged the challenges and thanked staff for family-engagement work.
