Thunder Bay Transportation outlines 'Rides to Wellness' expansion and heavy ridership

Angie Fox, executive director of Thunder Bay Transportation, briefed the council on June 20 about several service updates and new programs. Fox said the organization receives city millage support for city riders (who get a discounted fare), runs dial-a-ride service seven days a week, and recently launched a countywide "Rides to Wellness" program operating weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a typical fare of $15 one-way (additional stops or companions may change the cost). "We run that 7 days a week," Fox said while describing the fleet and services; she added that companion rides for those who need assistance are free and that some grant funds are being used to provide free transport to the Boys & Girls Club this summer.
Fox told the council the agency operates 33 vehicles and has seen heavy usage; she cited months with about 10,000 passengers across all services. Council members urged staff to share outreach materials with the senior center and asked about insurance and health-department requirements for vendors and events when services operate on public property. Fox said the agency is coordinating with local partners to expand awareness and will follow up on senior-center outreach.
