Board tables conveyance of Welch building pending walkthrough

The McDowell County Schools board tabled approval of a conveyance of a property in Welch after members said they had not seen the building and wanted a physical walkthrough before finalizing the donation.
A board member pressed that "what we haven't seen is the actual building itself," and asked the board to inspect the site before approving conveyance. The member also noted roughly $12,000 in legal fees already billed for deed work and asked whether the city could reimburse some of that cost. Superintendent Dr. Barker said he would check with legal counsel about reimbursement options and said much of the site is already emptied.
Directing a physical inspection, the board scheduled a walkthrough for Dec. 18 at 2:00 p.m. and then voted to table the conveyance decision. The chair announced a motion "by Ed and seconded by Angie" to delay action until after the walkthrough; the motion carried on a voice vote. The administration said any remaining movable items from the building would be offered to other schools or put on public auction and that nonprofits that had requested items would be considered first.
Board members repeatedly said they wanted transparency on the building's condition, the scope and recoupment of legal work, and the disposition of property before approving any conveyance. No final transfer was authorized at the meeting.
