Howard County commissioners unanimously adopted Ordinance 2026 BCCO 27 to change the intersection of County Road 850 East and County Road 50 South into a three‑way stop to improve safety for students walking between a nearby school and a recently built Greentown sports complex.
Amber, county highway staff, told commissioners the intersection was currently two‑way stop controlled with one through movement and said the proposed change would make every direction stop and enable placement of a crosswalk on the north leg. "We need a way for these students to cross those roads, a safer place for those students to cross," Amber said. She said township trustees plan to build a sidewalk on the west side of County Road 850 to connect the school to the sports complex.
Amber said the county will coordinate with the school and sheriff's office to implement education and enforcement during school opening. She noted the project timing is intended before school begins on August 4 so the crossing and outreach are in place when students return. Commissioner questions were brief; a motion to approve the ordinance was seconded and passed by voice vote.
