Putney Selectboard weighs lowering speed limits and adding traffic-calming measures on Old Route 5

The Selectboard considered draft changes to Putney's traffic ordinance on June 11 that would place Alice Holway and Carol Brown Way within a reduced-speed section and add criteria to support stop signs on Old Route 5.
Aileen Tulloch presented the draft and noted the full ordinance requires revamping; she suggested targeting the Alice Holway/Carol Brown section for immediate attention. Fletcher Proctor suggested lowering the posted limit to 20 mph rather than 25 mph and raised the question of how any new limit would be enforced. Tulloch mentioned the possibility of grant funding to install flashing speed-limit signs.
Howard Fairman observed that national standards require speed-limit signs to be placed at points of change and noted the need to coordinate with VTrans. Geordie Heller asked that Putney Mountain Road also be reviewed for a lower limit.
The board did not adopt a change at the meeting; the draft and enforcement questions will be further reviewed and coordinated with VTrans and local enforcement options.
