The McDowell County Board of Education voted to accept a COPS School Violence Prevention Program grant the superintendent said was awarded in the amount of $500,000. The superintendent told the board the request includes camera replacements, door access-control upgrades, visitor-management systems and improved communications with first responders; the district’s current local match was presented as $68,000, bringing available funds for the project to about $568,000.
The district’s legal review recommended the board adopt a resolution confirming awareness of the grant and the planned purchases to meet grant terms; the board carried the resolution by voice vote. The superintendent said some weapons-detection equipment and training are already in hand and that staff will coordinate training and implementation timelines so the upgrades do not create bottlenecks for schools.
Board members asked for clarification about eligible expenditures and the timeline for contractor procurement and training. The superintendent cautioned that additional safety-related grant decisions (a separate $200,000 safety grant application) are pending and that implementation will proceed as funds and training availability allow.
