Electric manager: New substation energized; fiber, redundancy projects planned

Stan Safford, manager of the electric department, updated the council on operations and infrastructure improvements, opening with staffing news: the department added five employees last year and three new apprentices who are attending classes.
"We turned it on last Thursday at 02:45," Safford said of the new substation, noting a glitch discovered Friday that was corrected and that staff planned to put load on it once they were confident it would not trip the system. Safford said the department is installing private fiber to tie substations together "so we can monitor everything that's going on a lot better" than via cellular service.
Other projects include tying south feeders together on Meridian Road to create a loop and redundancy so local customers can be restored more quickly, undergrounding a pole line that runs through a high school athletic area, and replacing several oil-filled breakers with gas breakers expected to arrive in January or February. He also said the department hooked up about 30 new electric services this year and praised the performance of newer hires.
