Committee advances Vision Zero resolution aiming to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2036

The Infrastructure Committee reviewed a draft Vision Zero resolution on May 18, 2026 that sets a local goal to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2036. A staff presenter described the safety action plan as a data-driven set of priorities, policy recommendations and targeted strategies; the presenter said adoption of the resolution is not required to complete the safety action plan but can help the city’s competitiveness for federal and other grants.

"The resolve in front of you is to establish a Vision Zero resolution, to eliminate traffic related deaths and serious injuries on the city of Bangor streets by 2036," the presenter said. The presenter described the plan as including education initiatives for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers and noted the plan will be finalized and returned to the committee when complete. Committee members asked whether the plan includes school-focused education; the presenter confirmed that education initiatives for school-age children are part of the strategy.

Chair Councilor Nish moved that the committee send the resolution to the full council for consideration; a staff presenter seconded the motion. The chair asked for objections and the transcript records no opposition before the item was advanced to the full council for a vote. The committee did not adopt the resolution on its own; the next procedural step is consideration by the full council.
