The Infrastructure Committee on May 18, 2026 moved to accept a donation from nonprofit Bangor Beautiful to plant 16 trees and 64 shrubs along a roughly 0.25-mile stretch of Main Street near the concert venue and Route 9 entrance. The presenter said the package includes 6 red oak, 7 red maple, 3 serviceberry, 64 fragrance sumac and 16 tree-watering rings; the presenter put the total donation value, including volunteer labor for the planting day, at $4,441.23.
"Total donation value plus labor, volunteers day of the plant is $4,441.23," the presenter said. Staff described the watering rings as a woven geotextile with a permeable membrane and moisture-retaining material designed to help newly planted trees take up water through surface roots during their first one to two years. Committee members asked technical questions about tree maturity and spacing; staff replied that the donated stock ranges in pot sizes and that the rings and follow-up maintenance are intended to increase survival rates.
A committee member praised the donation and referenced previous presentations about the benefits of trees for storms and pests. A member of the public asked whether added shade would protect nearby murals; staff said the mural faces mostly north-south and receives limited direct sun, but that larger trees should eventually provide more shade. Chair Councilor Nish asked for a motion; a motion to accept the donation was made and seconded on the record. No formal numerical vote was recorded in the transcript; committee discussion moved on after the motion.
