Wall replacement would close parkway during work; officials plan tree protection and granite salvage

Committee members asked about public access and the fate of the site’s historic granite; staff said the entire parkway would be closed for the duration of construction and discussed tree-protection options. Jeff Davis explained the city's intent to salvage removed granite as city-owned material and store it with Public Works for reuse: “That would be the plan… we would store that, without public works, and we’ve used them throughout the area,” Davis said.
Consultants described a phased, section-by-section approach—25 to 30 sections across multiple phases—that would allow progressive work and possibly let the contractor complete substantial portions in a single summer once design is ready. Staff cautioned mature trees may need temporary removal for structural access but said they will attempt to use a tree spade and replant where feasible to maintain the parkway’s historic character. Vinyl sheet-pile alternatives were discussed as durable but aesthetically incompatible and site conditions (ledge) likely make them impractical or much more expensive.
