Selectmen approve pilot to repaint pickleball lines black on two courts

The Wolfeboro Selectmen approved a pilot to paint the yellow pickleball lines black on courts 3 and 4 at Fosse Field as a trial to assess whether darker lines reduce visual clutter for tennis players and improve shared use.
Grant Hatch (speaker 8), who presented data showing pickleball users outnumber tennis players and advocated shared-use solutions, said the town had an opportunity during a planned resurfacing to test alternative striping. He warned that accepting a separate USTA GRAMA grant could lock the town into blended (USTA) lines until 2031. “If you accept that grant, it means selling out the local control of the courts and locking up any changes on the 2 courts in question until 2031,” he said. Brent Bauer (speaker 13), who described decades of court-marking experience, offered to paint temporary black lines at no cost. Parks and Rec has approved a morning trial using a color-tab paddle queue system to better match players by skill level.
Selectmen agreed to paint courts 3 and 4 black as a pilot (leaving court 2 unchanged) and to run scheduling and rack trials while Parks & Rec monitors usage. Christine (Parks & Rec staff) will provide timing and resurfacing dates and cost estimates for more permanent changes. The board said the pilot will run until resurfacing and staff will report back with observations and any recommended policy changes.
