Byram Township’s council asked its municipal engineer to pursue design and bid documents for new LED lighting and a replacement announcer booth at Carl O. Johnson Park. The engineer, identified in the minutes as Cory, said the existing football lights are more than 40 years old and estimated a manufacturer-backed LED system would cost about $250,000 to $300,000 once wiring and electrical upgrades are included.
Cory recommended steel-pole-mounted LED fixtures suitable for football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse and noted modern systems typically include remote on/off controls and full-system warranties. For the announcer booth, Cory proposed a two-story structure with a shipping-container base and a framed second floor; the cost was estimated at $50,000 to $90,000 depending on electric and HVAC needs. The engineer said projects would be competitively bid and constructed under New Jersey prevailing-wage and contracting rules.
Council members expressed support for moving the project forward. Jim McBain, who runs the township’s football program, told the council the program would help advance the project. Mayor Rubenstein asked Cory for a quick analysis of potential options; the council directed Cory to proceed and noted Mr. Stoner will provide additional information at the August meeting. Next steps are engineering design, vendor proposals and formal bidding.
