Greenwich approves $2 million placeholder for harbor dredging amid uncertain disposal costs

The BET Budget Committee voted 4-0 to approve a $2,000,000 carry-forward as the Town's placeholder cost share for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' planned dredging of the federal channel into Greenwich Harbor.
Ty Anderson, Chair of the Harbor Management Commission, and Geoff Steadman reported that approximately half of the material surveyed to date has been determined unsuitable for open-water disposal and would require a specially designed containment cell and a local cost share. They explained the $2 million figure appropriated in FY20 is a placeholder derived from comparable Corps cost-share formulas and that the actual cost-share formula for this project has not yet been determined. Construction is not anticipated before 2029. The Committee emphasized the project's importance to continued recreational and municipal use of the Grass Island Marina and discussed the need for clarity on ultimate cost allocation.
