Board prioritizes high-school area safety, considers quick traffic calming steps

Council members and staff described a string of close calls and incidents around the high-school area and the Park Street mid-block crossing, and said they are exploring near-term treatments while applying for a Safe Routes to School grant to fund more permanent upgrades. "We're looking to narrow the crosswalk so that it's shorter for everyone," the Chair said when describing an interim measure that could be done with delineators and other traffic-calming devices.
Members suggested rubber speed humps or rumble strips in advance of the crossing and noted noise concerns in residential areas if rumble strips are used. Staff recommended combining short-term approaches with grant-backed design work; they noted crossing guards have been hit in the area previously and emphasized that preventing fatalities and serious injuries remains the board's top priority.
