Commander Salen told the board the base employs about 440 active-duty and civilian personnel in Clatsop County and said the Coast Guard recently awarded a $444,000,000 contract for a Phase 2 maintenance and support building and pier extension at Tongue Point. "We are actively preparing for the arrival of the Coast Guard cutter Jeffrey Palazzo," Salen said, and he said the cutter's arrival is expected in late 2026 with final crew arrival anticipated by October. Salen also described ongoing discussions about air assets and advanced helicopter rescue-swimmer training at regional stations.
The board moved and seconded a resolution proclaiming August 2026 as Coast Guard Month and authorized the chair to sign the proclamation; the motion carried by voice vote. County leaders thanked Salen and expressed support for the Coast Guard as an economic and community partner.
The proclamation notes the county’s historical ties to the service and invites community members to observe the Coast Guard’s services and local contributions.
