Surry County commissioners approved staff to proceed with transitioning county-issued mobile phones, laptops and GPS units from Carolina West to Verizon after Carolina West's announced acquisition by Verizon. Staff said Verizon can offer a dedicated "network slice" for county communications and specialized frontline service for emergency responders, and will work with department heads on timing and implementation.
"They will offer us what they call a network slice, which will be dedicated county bandwidth, which puts the county mobile phones on a priority level," Denise said, describing Verizon's emergency-services offerings and a $200-per-line incentive the company was offering as part of the transition. The board approved the transition and asked staff to coordinate directly with Verizon, department heads, and emergency services to limit disruption and finalize the schedule.
