Allegany County to pay for AXON digital‑evidence platform under 10‑year agreement

Acting District Attorney Peter Degnan asked the Public Safety Committee to approve a resolution authorizing a new agreement with AXON Enterprises, Inc. for receipt, review and disclosure of digital evidence. The contract term is Aug. 1, 2026 through Aug. 31, 2036; the county will pay $14,702.76 in 2026 with annual increases, for a total estimated cost of $176,734.40 over the term. The committee approved forwarding the resolution authorizing the Board Chairman to execute the agreement, subject to County Attorney review.
Degnan told the committee that the county has used AXON to transcribe police body‑camera information and that the product will no longer be free: "AXON was once free, but after the first of the year they will have to pay for it, and they will request the enhanced version in their Budget," he said. He also requested an intra‑office budget transfer to move $14,705 into the appropriate DA account to cover the 2026 portion; that transfer was approved for resolution preparation.
Legislator Charles Bessette asked whether the contract is 100% county‑funded; Degnan said it currently is and that he intends to pursue grant opportunities in future years. The committee voted to approve the request and refer the matter for a formal county resolution. The approval was made by motion and carried without a recorded roll‑call tally during the meeting.
Next steps: the County Attorney will review contract terms and staff will prepare a resolution for the Board of Legislators. The DA's office indicated budget adjustments were made to accommodate the 2026 payment.
