Wellman said the department is mid‑audit on Medicaid eligibility (a "read audit") and continues to perform under contract metrics for economic services. He reported roughly 220 children in foster care with 11 new entries in May and said the agency is using after‑hours part‑time staff to reduce overnight burden on regular staff. "Our hirings have been higher than our separations," Wellman said, and commissioners accepted the May DSS report by motion.
Board members thanked staff for improvements in case management and asked about the part‑time after‑hours staff system and volunteer limitations for overnight care; Wellman clarified that overnight caregivers must meet background and certification requirements and that the county has used about 10 after‑hours part‑time staff to assist overnight.
