During the council workshop, code consultants and staff reviewed proposed updates to the International Building, Fire, Mechanical, Plumbing and related trades codes and discussed limited substantive changes to improve safety and support solar-ready construction.
Presenters emphasized that most recommended edits are administrative and that the package adds three appendices to provide solar-ready and photovoltaic (PV) readiness provisions for commercial and multifamily residential buildings. The fire-code discussion focused on new guidance for lithium‑ion batteries and EV charging in multi‑story structures; the presenter said recommendations include siting EV charging for first-floor access to aid fire response and top-floor charging to reduce heat accumulation.
The consultant said the recommended changes are consistent with regional practice and that code-adoption training for inspectors will be part of the implementation. Staff outlined a plan to introduce a draft ordinance at the next council meeting and to set an effective date about three months after approval to allow education for the building community.
