The board authorized the county manager to negotiate and execute a lease with Duke Energy for the Fauna Flora Access Area, a 10.6‑acre site at the end of Eagle's Nest Way adjacent to Fauna Flora County Park. Presenter Sarah Shabane said the site improvements under the Catawba relicensing agreement include two paved boat ramps, a courtesy dock, parking, restrooms, lighting and signage; permitted uses will include boating, fishing, wildlife observation and non‑motorized trails.
Shabane said Burke County would serve as the primary operator with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission responsible for certain operational responsibilities described in the lease. County staff said they do not anticipate a material increase in maintenance cost and that the county would not absorb liability for wildlife commission operations. Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the county manager to finalize and execute the lease subject to county‑attorney review.
