Committee presses to bring kindergarten inside; favors four-classroom addition

Committee members urged prioritizing the standalone kindergarten issue and generally favored an elementary Option 2 that adds four classrooms and enclosed circulation to bring kindergarten into the main building.
Committee discussion repeatedly returned to the standalone kindergarten building and the need to move kindergarten students into the main elementary facility. One committee member argued it would be “irresponsible for us to not recommend, at a minimum, some way to take care of the pending kindergarten building problem,” and pushed for at least the four-classroom courtyard addition that would provide enclosed circulation and interior kindergarten classrooms.
Architect Kurt Wilson described the four-classroom addition and internal circulation that would allow kindergarten to be integrated with the rest of the school and created safer, secure access. Members noted additional advantages of Option 2, including year-round protected play areas and improved public access to gym spaces for evening programming. The committee directed staff to keep Option 2 in the set of scenarios to be refined for community outreach and board review.
