Burke County will pursue a lease with Duke Energy for the 10.6‑acre Fauna Flora Access Area on Lake James after the board authorized the county manager to negotiate and execute the agreement July 20.
Parks staff described planned improvements under the Catawba relicensing agreement: two single‑lane paved boat ramps, a courtesy dock, paved parking, restrooms, lighting, signage and trail crossings. The county's Parks and Recreation Department will handle mowing, trail maintenance and restroom upkeep; the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will be responsible for operations and the county will assume no liability for wildlife‑related incidents, staff said. County manager Brian Bridal said there will be no lease cost and minimal anticipated maintenance impacts; the board approved the authorization unanimously.
Staff said the site will be open to the public with no user fees. The lease negotiation will be subject to county‑attorney review and a return to the board if substantive legal or fiscal terms change.
