Burke County accepted $1,630,000 on July 20 through the Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program (STRAP) to remove woody debris and undertake stream‑bank stabilization at multiple sites damaged by Hurricane Helene.
Leanne Branch outlined STRAP history and prior allocations to the county (2022 and 2024 projects) and reported that this round will fund more in‑depth bank stabilization work in addition to debris removal. She said staff identified 19 project sites—many proposed by private landowners who requested assistance after storm damage—and presented a projected timeline with project closeout planned for October 2028. The board approved the budget amendment to accept the grant unanimously.
Branch said earlier STRAP rounds funded debris removal on Silver Creek and the Catawba River and noted the county will use the new funds to prevent future flooding by stabilizing banks and improving channel condition. The presentation included a project map (in the meeting packet) and high‑level delivery schedule.
