Superintendent Saint Jean delivers final report, lauded for decade of renovations and community focus

Superintendent Saint Jean delivered his final report to the North Smithfield School Committee on July 21, thanking staff and community members for a decade of work and saying, “it's been real.” He opened with a photo slideshow that he said captured memorable school events, renovations and student activities from his tenure.

Saint Jean described extensive facility improvements after he arrived, from new science labs and windows to refreshed gym floors and updated signage, and said those changes helped turn previously out-of-date buildings into “vibrant and bright” learning spaces. He recounted a COVID-era graduation staged with a big screen and fireworks, which he defended as worthwhile for students despite criticism from other district leaders.

The superintendent singled out principals, custodial staff and district carpenters by name while reflecting on programs such as robotics and expanded music offerings. He told the committee he had met with incoming superintendent Dave Raleigh, provided documentation and would send a formal welcome so the community could get to know him.

Committee members responded with gratitude. One member said Saint Jean’s leadership left “a legacy here in North Smithfield,” while others praised his steady stewardship and wished him a healthy retirement. The committee presented the superintendent with a small token and an informal send-off during the meeting.

The report concluded with Saint Jean saying he believes the district is “in really good shape” and that staff are prepared to carry the work forward. The committee will continue with routine business; the record shows no formal action tied directly to the leadership transition at this meeting.
