Robin Nicholson of the Duke Energy Foundation announced two emergency‑preparedness grants to Burke County during the July 20 commission meeting: $10,000 to the Burke County Fire Marshal’s Office and $25,000 for emergency management. Nicholson said the awards were competitive and focused on emergency and storm preparedness.
Acting Chair Randy Burns read a proclamation honoring Nicholson’s decades of community engagement and partnership with Burke County. "Through her leadership and stewardship of philanthropic investments made possible by the Duke Energy Foundation, Ms. Nicholson has supported initiatives that have enhanced the quality of life for the citizens of Burke County," the proclamation states. Commissioner Berry moved to adopt Proclamation 2026‑09; the board voted unanimously to approve it.
The grants will fund projects described during the presentation, and staff accepted the proclamation and thanked Nicholson for her service. No further detail on grant contract terms was provided during the meeting; staff said project specifics will be handled through normal departmental processes.
