Resident urges more 'middle housing'; staff outlines recent housing-plan updates

Alex Bridal, a Salina resident, told the Planning Commission the city still faces a housing shortage and asked why the commission has not brought forward proposals to modify single-family zoning to allow middle-housing types such as townhouses and smaller multifamily options. "We've had a vacancy... available homes problem for a number of years," Bridal said and asked the commission to consider a proposal or a listening session on development types.
Staff replied that the city maintains a housing plan that has been amended and supplemented in recent years and that development activity has produced units (the staff cited a planned 500-unit Celina Destination project). Staff offered to provide Bridal with updated housing reports and said development incentives and text amendments are tools that could be pursued; planning staff also offered to schedule a study session or presentation on housing incentives and zoning options.
