City staff reviewed technical options for addressing cast-iron main deterioration and explained why no single method is a universal solution.
Martha Tasker described three approaches: open-cut replacement, horizontal directional boring and lining (or pipe-bursting in some contexts). She said lining is complicated for potable water because materials must meet KDHE and NSF-61 requirements, and the process requires removing scale, disinfecting and sometimes installing temporary service lines while the pipe is out of service.
Tasker said horizontal directional boring can minimize driveway and sidewalk disruption but still requires entrance and exit pits and service reconnections. "It's a lot of considerations... lining and directional boring could be bid to see what we get," she said. Staff also said they periodically review evolving technologies and consult other cities and trade associations about best practices.
